As part of our wayfinding scheme for the Barbican Arts Centre we designed a new visitor map. Previous maps tended to contain too much architectural detail making them confusing for the visitor. We stripped back the information and created a design which is simple, unfussy and intuitive.
The style of the map is designed
to relate to the visual language we created for the foyer wayfinding scheme. Produced on light weight paper we printed large numerals on the reverse which show through to indicate the level of each floor. The treatment of the numerals has a
direct link to the level directories
in the foyer. The visitor is therefore presented with a consistent language which is applied across all wayfinding information.
