The Helvetica typeface was developed by Max Miedinger, with Eduard Hoffmann, in 1957 for the Haas Type Foundry in Switzerland. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Blanka invited 50 leading European designers and graphic artists to produce a poster. Each designer was asked to illustrate an event from a year between 1957 and 2007.
Our year was 1987, the year we founded Cartlidge Levene. This presented an opportunity to look back through our archive and our relationship with the modernist font.
Entitled ‘Established 1987’, our poster is a chronological display of everything we have ever designed using Helvetica, spanning 20 years. The format of the poster was 50x50cm and was produced in an edition of 50.
An exhibition was held to launch the series of posters at the Design Museum, London and later travelled to ten cities in the UK and around the world.
