Cartlidge Levene were one of 28 leading European graphic design studios invited by Blanka to design a poster for ‘An exhibition in Mono’. Each designer was asked to produce an A1 black and white poster based around a selection of words relating to the design process. Our selected word was ‘Pattern’.
Our inspiration came from working on urban mapping projects. We became intrigued by the process of taking a place, breaking it down into its constituent parts and rebuilding it in graphic form. We were fascinated by the textural quality of patterns created by fields, hedgerows, walls, rivers and woods which, when abstracted to black and white, become ambiguous in scale and subject matter.
A limited edition of 100 posters was printed and our poster was displayed at the furniture design store ‘twentytwentyone’ during the London Design Festival 2006.
The Pattern poster can be purchased from Blanka at www.blanka.co.uk.
