Rachel Whiteread: Embankment invitation
We were commissioned to design a set of invitations and a gallery flyer for Rachel Whiteread’s ‘Embankment’, the sixth Unilever Series commission at Tate Modern. One of the UK’s leading contemporary sculptors, Rachel Whiteread transformed the Turbine Hall into a towering labyrinth made from 14,000 stacked white cubes.
The ice-like cubes were cast from
the inside of cardboard boxes and arranged to form disorientating pathways between stacks.
The invitations were printed on corrugated cardboard, scored at
45 degree angles to suggest the flattened-out corner of a box. The invitations acted as a precursor to the show’s theme, providing a hint of the subject matter without revealing too much prior to the opening.
