Doris Salcedo’s ‘Shibboleth’ was the eighth Unilever Series commission at Tate Modern. We were commissioned by Unilever to design a set of invitations and related printed material for a launch event hosted by Unilever’s CEO.
The installation was a dramatic
fault-line cut into the concrete floor
of the Turbine Hall. The Unilever Series commission is a closely guarded secret prior to the opening, so the invitation for ‘Shibboleth’
had to relate to the artist’s concept without revealing too much.
Our concept was to represent the dramatic opening in the Turbine Hall floor with a graphic diagonal line.
We then used a variety of printing techniques to reproduce the line.
On the invitation the line was laser-cut
out of a concrete-coloured grey card which revealed its red interior when folded. The envelopes have a red foil-blocked line and the welcome card and menu are cut diagonally revealing a flash of red when folded.
